Y'all Hungry?

Oh hello, Saturday. You're going to be a LOOOONG one aren't you?

Matt and I got up early because we had crammed a whole slew of things into one little day. Starting out in Charleston we had to pack up the car first thing before getting going which is normal except this time we had to unpack and repack. As we've now hit the hotter weather we needed to rearrange where everything is so our day bags have shorts and t-shirts, not sweaters, boots, and pants. The whittling down process always takes awhile; I'm sad to be separated from any of my kids ... I mean, clothes.

Finally loaded up, we had a few last things to see in Charleston. Matt showed me the houses and dorm he lived in during college. He was sad that the jasmine he had planted in one spot had been cut back and not allowed to grow down the railing. I agree its a shame - would have made the place look cuter.

Parking the car on a side street, we went walking around the College of Charleston campus, where I was shown the quad, a pretty fountain, and the building where Matt's major was housed.

Matt grabbed a little handful of Spanish moss from one of the campus trees and we've added it to the growing collection of items on the dashboard. Then it was time to drive. Bye Charleston! We'll miss you!!

Savannah was our next stop, and it wasn't that far of a drive - only 3 hours which was rather pleasant actually. As we were trucking along I was updating our tally sheets where I keep track of who spends how much and on what. At one point I asked Matt some addition problem and he got all excited. He said "ask me something else, we should do this, we need to be better. Gotta exercise it". So welcome to Sarah's Cartime Classroom people!! We do addition and subtraction with a side of multiplication all day. Cuz we smaht.

Then, Savannah!

We have ventured into Paula Deen territory and Matt has decided to celebrate that fact by saying "Y'all hungry?" every five minutes. I plan on finding it endearing until we've left Georgia :)

Our very first stop, even before getting to our hotel, was a place called Angel's BBQ so Matt could have some real southern goodness. We have a Lonely Planet guide to the USA and have been checking it out for each town we stay in for suggestions on restaurants and inns. It was totally accurate about Angel's:

"Utterly low-brow and hidden down an uneventful lane, Angel's pulled pork sandwich with sea-salted french fries will leave you humbled and thoroughly satisfied - and that's before you tear through their impressive list of housemaid sauces, one made with scary hot ghost and Chiltepin chilies"

Matt got the Angel's special which is just their pulled pork sandwich with slaw on a bun and a side of fries with an orange soda. He tried the different sauces and pronounced it all delicious. I had fun trying a couple sauces on his fries.

We walked around the historic downtown for a little bit, then went to our hotel to change for dinner. No, Paula's restaurant didn't make our list of must see's (I didn't want a fried stick of butter - haha) but a gorgeous place called The Olde Pink House did and we were both just blown away. They had the most gracious service and were more hospitable and welcoming than anyplace I think I've ever been. And the food was tasty, too. I got salmon which was perfectly cooked and a yummy cocktail called The Bees Knees. Matt got Planter's Punch and more meat, because it's the rule in the South; pork shank which literally fell off the bone.

Finally heading off to bed we had one last adventure for the day. Matt had parked the car in a parking garage because there are maybe 5 spots in the downtown area and they were all taken we got there to eat. And can I just say it was only $1 per hour to park - in a city - downtown - less than a block from our restaurant? Amazing. In NewYork we had to pay something like $59 for 6 hours to go to Corton. Anyways, that wasn't the adventurous part - the truck almost getting stuck is . . .

When we first pulled in the truck just fit under the safety bar saying we had 7' clearance (remember we've got surf boards and a cargo box clamped on up there). But, as we went higher up to find a spot it got narrower and narrower until we actually scraped at one point. Funny when you're both sitting inside the vehicle but ducking around every corner as if that will help :)

Matt did manage to maneuver us out of there - ain't he swell?

Sunday we hit Florida, but thats a tale for another time. Right now I've got to get ready for more driving  (perhaps with a side of car math).
